Scanning Soundscan - 6/23

Looking at the Billboard charts this week actually made me sad. The top 10 is even more depressing than usual.

Is it any wonder that people don’t buy music anymore?

At least Drake’s record actually sold for Universal. He did about 447k in the first week. There is no escaping that this was the biggest album of the week. It was #1 on the overall chart, Indie Retail chart, Mass Merchant Retail chart, and Digital Album chart.

Also, I cannot stand The Gaslight Anthem, but their sales success must be mentioned this week as the venerable Side One Dummy label and this band (who have organically built a rabid fanbase through touring) have hit #16 with sales of almost 27k. About 2100 copies of that total were on vinyl and 10,500 were digital.

Swedish diva Robyn hits the inside of the Top 100 with “Body Talk Pt. 1”, it debuts at #97 with about 5500 copies sold. Over 3500 copies of that were digital. Her self-titled album from 2008 peaked at #100 and only sold about 33k domestically.

There aren’t a lot of other remarkable debuts this week, so I’ll recap some of the impressive indie album totals. I had mentioned a few weeks ago about the success of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. That is an album that, by next week, will have almost crossed the 100k threshold. It’s sitting right now at 95,500 and is consistently selling over 3k a week.
